Who will read it?
My novel tackles controversial themes that we are still wrestling with as a culture: the acceptance of gay relationships, violence against gays, gays in the military, not to mention the damaging psychological effects of war, and the representation of war through images and propaganda. Obviously, it would have appeal for gay audiences, but not exclusively so. General readers of literary fiction--from book club members to casual readers--will be receptive to the story; the character development and mystery will compel them to read on, while the issues the novel raises will provide fodder for discussion.
What will I do to promote it?
I'm willing and able to do as many readings at bookstores, community events, festivals, and conferences as I can. I've established this website, and I'm keeping a blog, Talking the Walk(johncopenhaver.wordpress.com) about having the double profession of teaching high school English and writing. My hope is to continue to build my network and exposure through Facebook, Goodreads, and other online resources.
What type of book is it?
Dodging and Burning is both historical fiction and a literary mystery focusing on rich character development. Structurally and thematically, it derives its inspiration from Margaret Atwood's Blind Assassin and Ian McEwan's Atonement. Stylistically, it has some kinship with the straightforward prose of Highsmith's fiction.
